The Making of a World Record
In early October 2006, Bob Stannard of the Better Bennington Corporation contacted Jay Hathaway, the Executive Director of the Manchester, Vermont Chamber of Commerce, and asked for his assistance in providing the carved pumpkin to downtown Bennington on October 28th in an attempt by the BBC to beat a Guinness World Record ("The Most Pumpkins Carved and Lit in the Same Place at the Same Time").
Jay felt compelled to help his neighboring town but felt that there was a collateral opportunity in this for the town of Manchester, Vermont. Knowing that simply asking local residents to carve pumpkins to help Bennington would be a challange, he decided to apply for his own world record: "The Most Pumpkins Being Carved Simultaneously."
The application was made and on October 28th, the record was set and the pumpkins were in fact delivered to Bob in Bennington.
